The BHNZ structure has a Board with elected Executive members, consisting of a President, Vice President and Treasurer with two elected representatives from each of three regions - Northern, Central, Southern, plus youth representatives. The Board in turn make the appointments for any management positions.
JOHN DENTON joined City of Sails in 1988. Baritone. He heads their Chorus Music Team and was a prior Chapter President. Quartet Silver medalist in 2001 (HiJacks) and Gold in Seniors (Formula 4) in 2016.
Appointed BHNZ VP in 2013, President in 2015.
John was a corporate advisor, manager and mediator, has been GM of not-for-profits and is a retired Chartered Accountant holding several other Board appointments.
|Vice President||Matthew Gifford||
Matt is well-known in Barbershop circles worldwide as bass in Musical Island Boys who were 2014 International Quartet Champions. He is the only certified BHS Singing judge residing outside of North America and is a founding member and assistant director of the Vocal FX chorus in Wellington NZ. His coaching takes him around the world.
He joined the BHNZ Board as Vice-President in 2015 and chairs the Education Team responsible for Harmony Universities in NZ and other education initiatives. He co-chairs an Australasian Contest & Judging Team, responsible for judge training and certification.
Matt resides in Wellington where he works as a Consultant in education.
|Secretary||Denys Moss (Harmony A Plenty)||
DENYS MOSS joined Harmony A-Plenty Oct 2013. He sings Lead and was appointed Chorus Manager for HA’P and has been instrumental in raising money to assist that chorus.
He was appointed BHNZ Secretary in 2014,
Denys has a Financial Planning degree from Deacon University, Melbourne and has chaired the Budget Service, Turangi and been Regional Rep for the Budget Service, Tauranga
ROBERT KURZ joined City of Sails in Feb 2013. He sings Lead and his quartet “Heritage Harmony” won Bronze, 2015, Silver 2014.
Robert is Treasurer of both COS and BHNZ, having joined the BHNZ Board in 2014.
Robert is a Civil Engineer, a business owner in South Africa and works as a Project and Procurement Manager out of Auckland.
|Board Members||Frank Sargent (Mighty River Harmony)||
FRANK SARGENT joined Hamilton Hair Razors (now Mighty River Harmony) 1996. He sang tenor for many years then migrated to Lead singing in two quartets Eureka and Cell Mates winning the most entertaining quartet award in 2001 at Pan-Pac, Melbourne. He sang in BHS International Contest with the US Chorus ‘Carolina Vocal Express’ in 2016.
Frank has been on MRH board for many years and President for a short period.
He was appointed Treasurer of BHNZ (then called NZABS) and held the role for 4 years before moving to become a Northern Regional Rep.
EDDIE KIM started Barbershop in 2003 and joined Polytonix Chorus in 2012 as a tenor and was heavily involved in the chapter as President and front line director. He has won many National chorus medals with them and competing in two BHS International contests with Vocal FX.
Eddie is involved in YSIH, coaching and directing Kristin School boys’ Chorus to a national top 3 finish.
A NZ registered Pharmacist, Eddie currently working as a Regional Medical Information Specialist for the Asia Pacific region for a top global pharmaceutical company.

BRIAN (WOODY) WOOD joined Bays Barbershop Boys (now Men in Accord), Nelson, August 2010. He started as a Lead, then switched to Bass. MiA won the small Chorus Silver medalist 2016 he was also in the Most Entertaining Quartet, The Hemispheres, in 2016. He has been Chorus VP in 2011 & President since 2012.
Woody is a retired Police Sergeant – served 32 years. He’s also served 3 years on the Picton Borough Council & Marlborough Catchment Board. His outside interests include gardening, reading boating, fishing, spending time at his Sounds bach with his partner.
|Kevin Day (Harbour Capital Chorus)||
KEVIN DAY joined Harbour Capital Chorus as a Lead 10 years ago after signing up to a 6-week introduction course to barbershop.
He stepped up to being President of the chorus after a stroke left Neville Treweek unable to continue and has been in that role ever since.
Kevin became BHNZ Central Regional Rep 5 years ago and his key responsibility on the board of BHNZ is conventions. Kevin is a certified AGBJ judge in the Contest Administration category.
He works for Aconex, a software supplier, as NZ Account Manager looking after many corporates’ and government departments’ requirements. He is not, however, an IT geek.
|Michael Markham (VocalFX)||
MICHAEL MARKHAM joined Harbour Capital Chorus 1997, being a second generation barbershopper following in the footsteps of the late Petra Markham.
In 2003, he became a founding member of Vocal FX, acting as chorus manager and President until 2016. He has been an active quartet singer, winning the NZ Nationals with Resonance in 2006, singing Lead.
Outside barbershop, Michael is married to Liz and is a partner at Kendons Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors.
|Nick Round-Turner (Southern Sou'nz)||
NICK ROUND-TURNER joined Southern Sou'NZ in 2002. He is currently their Assistant MD. He became a BHNZ Regional Rep in 2013.
Nick has many years of involvement in repertory and musical theatre and is involved with various community and arts events in Invercargill.
He is currently employed as GIS specialist at Venture Southland. He has a background in plant ecology, agricultural science and science communication.
|Youth Co-ordinator||Henare Mihaere||
HENARE MIHAERE directed and coached NZ's highest scoring YMIH quartet (Fourth Inversion) and chorus (The Saints). He is the Tenor of The Mission, 2015 BHNZ champions and 2016 3rd place International BHS Youth Quartet.
Henare has held the role of National Youth Coordinator since 2009, actively planning and facilitating a number of national YSIH conventions.
He is currently employed as a commercial and procurement advisor to the New Zealand Treasury.
